Tangled Up in Lights: How to Fix Your Pre-Lit Christmas Tree

Pre-lit Christmas trees that don't work are probably the most frustrating thing! You can troubleshoot and fix issues with your pre-lit Christmas tree by following the steps below.

The problems you encounter with pre-lit Christmas trees can often be solved without much effort. It is common for trees to have problems when the light strings dim, or when they are first erected.

To troubleshoot, a lit string can be tested to determine whether a bulb is defective, or a set of working lights can be replaced.

Here are some of the most common problems with light strings on pre-lit trees, as well as their solutions.

The four basic steps to troubleshooting pre-lit trees

Step 1

Multiple plugs stacked together on the tree can cause a section to stay off or even flicker if one of the plugs comes loose. So, make sure that each plug is securely attached.

It is important to inspect each section between the poles where the poles are connected to ensure that nothing is blocking the connection and the plugs are properly seated.

Step 2

Inspect the plug fuses for damage. Check for burnt fuses or replace them. You might also try connecting the extension cord to the strand if the problem persists.

Step 3

If all the fuses look okay or if replacing them does not resolve the issue, the problem may be with the bulb or the wiring. Replace any faulty bulbs with new ones.

Replace the old string of lights with a new one, and the wire issue will be resolved.

You may need to trim the wires with wire cutters (trimming with wire cutters makes the job go faster) if you would like to keep your trees for as long as possible. When your tree is fully lit, you can restring it with lights, allowing you to enjoy it even longer!

Step 4

Bulb testers can be useful if there are no damaged bulbs. They are available online and in several hardware stores around you.
